FANTASTIC retro gaming machine!
This little guy is absolutely amazing! You can play what it comes with out of the box, or you can go all out and install custom firmware on it like I did. The included SD card is okay for casual use, if you plan on doing more advanced stuff with it I recommend one of the Samsung EVO cards in 128GB. Full disclosure, the first product I received did not work, but it was replaced quickly with one which is excellent. I like this version of the console because of the analog sticks, some of the games I play don't work well with the D-PAD and this version, the H, provides the necessary analog sticks. Very happy with this unit!

Loads very slow and many will not play.
I was very pleased when my RG35XX H Retro Handheld Game Consoles arrived. It had a good-quality look and feel. All the buttons and joysticks had a good feel to them. However, when I turned it on it was very slow to load. Many of the games took even longer to load and would not play once they were finally loaded. The instructions were nearly non-existent and printed far too small to read properly.

Update the firmware before first boot!
First thing: It does not boot with the included memory card. You will have to manually update the firmware - you'll have to search for "update RG35XX H firmware" or go to Anbernic's website to get the file, but when you find it, they provide everything that you need to get the device updated in the zip folder. The microSD card that comes with the handheld is bugged - it seems like the seller is attempting to update the devices and might have a bad image that's being written to the SD. Because of this, it does not boot all the way on and sits at the company logo - again, make sure you write the current firmware image to your SD before using the device. I personally feel that this is not something directly related to the actual device. Even though I was annoyed that I had to do all of this to get it to start, I am giving it a fair review based on its actual function once it is working properly. With that out of the way - this little console is a budget powerhouse! It runs all of the basic games from the PS1 era and earlier, and I've not ran into much trouble with Dreamcast games. It has major slowdowns and choppiness on some N64 games, but most run well. I wasn't expecting it to be much more than a retro-home console emulator. For that, it's perfect. The joysticks feel almost exactly like Switch joysticks. They have a nice pull, they're sturdy, and the 'click' is satisfying. The other face buttons (such as the D-Pad and A/B/X/Y) are a nice spongy texture. Shoulder buttons have a nice click to them, with four shoulder buttons, L1/R1 and L2/R2.The screen is beautiful and vibrant, gets bright, and has a nice "dim" mode as well. The body size of this thing is perfect for pockets, but only if it's the only thing in that pocket. It comes with a screen protector, however the edges of the screen are rounded and the screen protector eventually lifts at the edges. The back of the device has two 'pads' where your fingers can grip it while playing, which is nice, but it catches in the pocket sometimes. The sound comes out loud through the bottom, and has a nice pop and bass to it.I dig it! I'd fully recommend it for someone looking for an affordable handheld with joysticks!

Great console but going out of my way to update Firmware is a NO NO
This is a great console, it really is however without being aware of the know-how to update the firmware on a seperate micro-SD card this device is in essence, rendered worthless. Although it is not a COMPLICATED process, it really makes me have to get this device a pretty awful review. If you try to boot it up as is, it just freezes on the load screen, aka, you literally can NOT play it as is out of the box. If you were to lets say play this on Christmas day and you couldn't even turn on the console it would be a really big downer. There is quite a few tutorials on how to do this but you really should NOT have to do this by searching "update RG35XX H firmware" but it still is such an annoying thing to do.The PLUS side is there is a lot of customization you can do IF you know what you're doing and the internal specs and battery life are actually pretty good. You can play most older gen games from the PS1 and before era with almost no issues. It also feels quite nice to hold in your hands so no disappointment on that end. The vibration is quite nice, as well.Overall good console but the flaw of firmware issues is quite a concern and it shouldn't be being sent out like this as it is, so that is a BIG issue for me.

Stopped working after one boot sequence
I was able to play this console just once before it completely stopped working. The second time I fired it up, it would not boot past the Anbernic screen. This is likely due to a low-quality microSD card that corrupted the boot files written to it, which unfortunately is a very common issue with these types of consoles. The fact I was only able to play this console one time before it died is a major red flag for me. I cannot recommend this device to anybody given the abject quality control measures in place by the seller.
