Works very well.
This may be an aftermarket camshaft but it is working fine in my Craftsman 21 hp lawn mower. It was very good quality when I installed it a few months ago. Craftsman has a very poor design on the compression release and this is where they fail. If your mower is very hard to start and it will not turn past the compression stroke likely this is your problem, not the starter. Watch You Tube for instructions on installing this camshaft.

Perfect fit for my 17.5HP Briggs on a Craftsman LT1000 mower
The media could not be loaded. Ā The part in my hand is an old compression release valve I found laying in my engine. The video shows the problem. The engine was hard to start and would stop spinning. This new camshaft has an intact compression release which swings on and off via centrifugal force. I replaced the camshaft and solved the problem. You will also need a new crankcase gasket. You may as well replace the vertical shaft oil seal at the same time. The prior tip to clean out the motor with a magnet is recommended. In case it's not obvious, pay attention to the timing marks when installing this. The dots on the gears must be lined up next to each other. Edit: My 17.5 Briggs has a cracked block now. This part is great and is unscathed however...the timing gear cracked in half and they struck and cracked a hole in the block ruining the engine. I add this to advise, it might be a good idea to replace the timing gear and both cylinder valve push rods too, while you're at it.

Fit perfectly
It fit perfectly in my Briggs 31 series motor. Made starting a dream vs a nightmare.Time will tell how long it lasts. After a few hours and a dozen starts it's working fine.Spend 2 hours cleaning for every hour spent on disassembly/assembly. The time will be well spent. After thorough cleaning, I recommend oiling the journals, lifters, rocker arms, etc when re-assembling the motor. 'Hate to break something straight away because of metal on metal grinding on that first start. And when you get everything hooked up ready to go, don't forget to add oil to the motor. I was so excited I almost forgot.I have to admit I hesitated to by a cheap knockoff part. But given that Briggs made a faulty design causing all this work, I didn't want to support them by buying the same part again nor pay any more than I have to. If this breaks early, I'll have to say it was quality of workmanship and get the Briggs part next time. Until then (and maybe forever), five stars.

Old part did not allow decompression when trying to start thus engine would not turn over. Starts easily now.

Got the 18.5 hp Briggs and Stratton going again
I got these to replace a cam that had a worn decompression release. I changed out the cam and installed this one that fit just right and it made all the difference.
