Great DE Razor

Wilkinson DE razor arrived this morning. I'd skipped a shave first thing so I could test it out. I also had stubble on my scalp, so gave it a test on face and scalp.Perfect little razor!!I've wet shaved my whole life and have used plastic polluters for a good few of those years, but for the last five years it's been all metal.I've used double edged, single edged shavettes and cutthroat razors. My last DE razor to yesterday was a clone of the Merkur 34C. It did the job, but didn't really get into the corners that well. Cutthroats are good, but you aren't going to be rushing a scalp shave with one of those unless you want to be...well, err...scalped.Anyhow, I was impressed by this razor. Impressed by it's price, but also impressed by the quality of the shave it offered. Face was done in 5-minutes. No nicks. Scalp was done in 10-minutes. No nicks. The DE gets right up to the edge of the razor, so, makes it easy to get under your nose. It's also great for giving the hairs in your ears a trim as well. Nothing worse than old blokes having Tufts hanging out of their ears 😂😂😂.The angle of the blade being fixed is great. After a minute, I knew what angles I could tilt the razor to without the risk of any nicks. Scalp and face baby smooth - but a lot of that will be down to the Derby DE blades (which I really recommend having used them in shavettes and safety razors).Going to enjoy this little shave buddy. Delivers a quick, clean and easy shave. That deserves top marks from me 👍.

Classic, and a superior shave.

In these days of multi-bladed, flexing and swivelling, plastic razors (with and without vibration motors), it is very easy for the uninitiated to think of the classic single-blade razor as old-fashioned, even potentially anachronistic. In truth, however, these are the razors you grow into, not out of.The number one cause of shaving rash is heavy handedly dragging a blade multiple times over the same patch of skin because you didn't get it right in the first stroke. Those multi-bladed razors were all designed to do exactly that, to allow multiple passes of blades in a single stroke - each blade after the first increasing the stress and abrasion to the skin. Furthermore, all those spring-bladed, plastic headed multi-blades allow an unskilled shaver to get the job done - without learning to shave lightly. Those multi-blade razors actually encourage going heavy-handed, and causing additional skin damage and shaving sensitivity.A classic, single-blade razor, such as this Wilkinson Sword Classic, is actually one of the best shaving tools ever designed and made. It takes a little practice to learn the perfect angle to hold to the skin, and you can nick yourself with the blade if you are careless enough, for certain. But a little practice and you'll get a good, close shave every time with the least possible damage to the skin, and the least shaving rash of your life. Moreover, you'll save an absolute fortune in blades, and for the environmentally conscious, the blades you discard can be fully recycled as they are pure metal, easily melted down and reused. This razor features a cool 'butterfly' mechanism for loading and unloading the blades, where you simply twist the base of the handle and the top opens up to allow very quick, safe changing of blades (you should always handle the blades carefully of course, by the safe edges, not the 'live' edges). Quick and easy, and very practical. For the best results from a razor like this, I do recommend getting a proper shaving brush to lather up as this both lifts the hairs and helps hold them more rigid so that one stroke with the razor gets a good smooth result. Highly recommended for those men ready to learn to shave properly, or those who dislike shaving rash.

No going back

This is my first safety razor. I've been using cartridge razors for many years, but like many here wanted to stop the plastic waste. This is my first foray into double edged safety razors. I won't be going back.First though. There is an overwhelming amount of guff out there about safety razors. Badger hair brushes, routines, blade types, ... the list goes on. You could spend a fortune, and think that there is some arcane art here if you're not careful. Just remember your grandad shaved like this, before modern consumerism and the Internet.Anyway, rant over. Here's what works for me. You'll find your own thing, maybe this will help you get going.1. Shave after the shower when my face is still soft.2. Use palmolive classic shaving cream. It's old school, cheap, readily available in the supermarket, and comes in a metal rather than plastic tube (there's a fair chance you're looking to reduce your plastic waste too)3. Lather it on my face. You don't need a brush or bowl.... Although to be clear I'm not saying that you won't find they add to your 'shaving pleasure'. Keep it quite wet to reduce friction by splashing water on a few times.4. Shave with the grain. I don't obsessive over blade angles or blade types. It's not that important. Don't keep going over the same area, or you'll be shaving skin rather than hair.5. The biggest difference to cartridge razors is 'don't press hard', let the weight of the razor resting on your skin so the job. Go slowish.6. Residual palmolive after rinsing makes a great moisturiser.Apart from the first two shaves when I was learning, and using shaving oil rather than palmolive, I've not cut myself once in about a month. I'm not finding it difficult. I doubt you will either. The razor itself now... ;)Well made, chrome finished, solid, easy to use butterfly blade replacement. Cheap too.Things I would change. Slightly longer handle for one, I've got big hands. The biggest change for me though is the bozo knurling design. It's a spiral, so the razor wants to move out of your hands when wet. Machined rings would be far better, or diamond knurling which would be comparable cost. I think design has unnecessarily trumped functionality there. Not a huge deal though, and I would buy the razor again. I think it will last a lifetime. The blades are cheap too, just make sure you buy ones that come in plastic free packaging. Enjoy, and check out styptic pencils if you're knicking your face a lot.
