Q: This says "metal". Can it be used on wood?

I used it on wood. Works great. Also vinyl siding.

Q: Could I use this to fill in small dents in my wooden cabinets that have been painted?

Absolutely. Fill...dry...light sanding...prime and finish coat. This stuff is just great for small and large dents , cracks, and nail holes. Gary Terry 46 years contracting

Q: Does this clean up with water or is it oil based?

It has a little of that oil-based small, but it can be cleaned up with water. I use a damp rag to go over the recently puttied holes and it cleans up nicely. I've had good luck with this stuff.

Q: is this the same as, or can it be used as joint compound?

I would not recommend this product for joint compound. This product dries pretty hard, so it would be a lot of extra work if you had to do a lot of sanding. I use it for small patches, nail holes, etc.
